I understand your point about studying lighting, illumination and everything if you're an art student. That makes perfect sense. But this site is really strict on original artwork and stuff.
That aside, don't give up, friend. You can't let one user's review demotivate you. If you're talking about that comment from the user 'MrWife', don't worry: she has a lot of ridiculously negative reviews, she even attacked one of my pieces (had to flag her comment and get it removed, it was basically an insult.)
Your pixel artwork is looking fantastic, with more like 'Daniel in Pixel' you could illustrate sprites for games or something. The two recent illustrations you did look ace, great work on those!
